Bangkok countdown cruises — the 30-second answer

  • Where the fireworks are watched: every boat holds position in the same stretch of river from roughly 23:45 to 00:15 for the countdown and the fireworks.
  • Best seats: the rooftop (top open-air deck) gives the clearest unobstructed view, the front deck is next best, and air-conditioned decks watch through glass.
  • Price range: ฿2,500 – ฿9,900 per adult. An open-air seat costs roughly ฿500 – ฿2,000 more than the air-conditioned deck on the same boat.
  • Cheapest outdoor seat still open: Faraya rooftop at ฿4,000 · cheapest front deck still open: Unicorn Cruise at ฿4,800.
  • Halal: Faraya is the only halal-certified boat and the only 100% alcohol-free one.
  • On seven boats the rooftop and front deck are one ticket at the same price — say which zone you want in the request field when you book, otherwise the operator decides on the night.

🪧 Rooftop or front deck? Say so when you book. On Noah Cruise, VIVA Alangka Cruise, Unicorn Cruise, Royal Princess, The Planet, Super Galaxy and Sawasdee Chaophraya the rooftop and the front deck are sold as one open-air ticket at the same price. Write the zone you want in the request field of your booking — if you do not specify one, the operator will seat you wherever works best on the night, and on a sold-out New Year's Eve that is not always the spot you had in mind.

Our advice: if the budget allows, book a boat that sells its rooftop or front deck as a separate ticket. Almost every complaint we receive on the morning of 1 January comes from someone who ended up on the air-conditioned deck and only then discovered they could not photograph the fireworks through the glass.

Can you step outside from an air-conditioned seat? Usually yes. Nearly every boat lets indoor guests go out to the open-air areas for the countdown, but standing space is limited and packed from about 23:30, because everybody has the same idea — and you will be standing behind the people who paid for that spot. Treat it as a bonus, not as your plan.

A note on “open-air under the roof”: some open-air decks are open to the breeze but still roofed above (for example the 2nd floors of Meridian Cruise 2 and Sawasdee Chaophraya Cruise). We do not count those as outdoor seats, and they do not appear under the rooftop or front-deck filters.

A note on flat all-seats tickets: Chaophraya Cruise sells one price covering the whole boat and does not sell open-air seating separately. We do not count that as a guaranteed outdoor seat, and it does not appear under the rooftop or front-deck filters.

Where the boats watch the New Year fireworks

Bangkok's main New Year fireworks are launched over the river in the central stretch of the Chao Phraya, between Taksin Bridge and Memorial Bridge. Every countdown cruise on this page follows the same plan: a 2 to 4 hour sail along the river, then holding position in that stretch for the midnight countdown before returning to its own pier.

Because the fireworks view is the same on every boat, the real differences are:

  • Outdoor seat or behind glass — by far the biggest factor for your photos and the atmosphere.
  • How long you stay on the water — boats returning 01:00–01:45 keep the party going after midnight; boats back at 00:15–00:30 are fireworks-and-home.
  • Food, drinks and entertainment — from free-flow bars and gift sets to Thai street food, BBQ stations, cabaret and adult shows.
  • Which pier is easiest from where you are staying — traffic on 31 December is severe, so the pier genuinely matters.

Piers, registration times and maps for 31 December 2026

⚠️ Read this before you book. On 31 December the pier, the check-in window and the departure time are different from the same boat's normal rounds. Some boats depart from an entirely different pier — in particular, boats that normally leave from ICONSIAM move to Supakarn Pier or Wat Kalayanamitr Pier that night, because the ICONSIAM riverfront is used for its own New Year event. Please (1) check the option you select when booking, (2) re-read the pier and time in your confirmation email, and (3) allow at least 1–2 hours more than usual: riverside roads are jammed from about 19:00, and if you arrive after check-in closes the operator cannot refund you.

River City tip: VIVA Alangka checks in at RCB Forum on the 2nd floor (next to RCB Galleria 4, at the Pier 3 end of the building), boards at Pier 3 and drops off at Pier 1. The River City car park fills up early on 31 December — Grab, Bolt or LINE MAN is the easier way in.

The easiest option: sleep where you sail

The Riverside Bangkok Hotel pier is the least stressful start to New Year's Eve. It sits away from the worst of the central gridlock, so the surrounding roads move noticeably better on 31 December — and it is a hotel in its own right. If you would rather not lose the evening to traffic, book a room, walk downstairs to board Faraya Cruise, Riverside Kinlen or Riverside Carnival, and be back in your room two minutes after the boat docks at 01:00, with no queue for a surge-priced ride home.

As of 15 October 2026, outdoor seats are still open on VIVA Alangka Cruise, Noah Cruise, Unicorn Cruise, Royal Princess Cruise, The Planet Cruise and Super Galaxy Cruise (rooftop and front deck sold as one ticket), on Faraya Cruise and Riverside Kinlen (rooftop), and on Sawasdee Chaophraya Cruise, where the sky deck is still available but the prow is sold out. Riverside Carnival, The Opulence, Wonderful Pearl, Smile Riverside, Meridian Cruise 1 and Meridian Cruise 2 have all sold their outdoor decks and only air-conditioned or under-roof seating remains. Chaophraya Cruise sells one flat price for all seats, so an open-air spot cannot be guaranteed there.

Yes, but you have to ask. On Noah Cruise, VIVA Alangka Cruise, Unicorn Cruise, Royal Princess, The Planet, Super Galaxy and Sawasdee Chaophraya the rooftop and the front deck are sold as a single open-air ticket at the same price. Write the zone you want in the request field when you book and we will pass it to the operator. If you do not specify a zone, the operator will seat you wherever works best on the night — which on a full New Year's Eve sailing may not be the spot you pictured. A preference is not an absolute guarantee, but it is almost always honoured when it is given early.

Can I book a countdown cruise on 31 December itself?

Realistically, no. Bangkok countdown cruises fill well in advance and there is usually nothing left by 31 December. Outdoor decks go first — rooftops and front decks often sell out within days of a boat going on sale, which is why six boats on this page had already sold their outdoor decks out completely in early October, and a seventh has sold its prow. If an open-air seat matters to you, book as early as you can; waiting until December means taking whatever indoor seats remain.

Are the piers and departure times the same as the normal rounds?

No — and this is the mistake guests make most often. On 31 December the pier, the check-in window and the departure time differ from the same boat's normal rounds. Some boats depart from an entirely different pier, especially those that usually leave from ICONSIAM, which move to Supakarn Pier or Wat Kalayanamitr Pier because the riverfront is used for its own New Year event. VIVA Alangka also boards and drops off at different piers that night — Pier 3 out, Pier 1 back at River City. Is a rooftop seat worth the extra money?

For most people, yes. Air-conditioned decks watch the fireworks through glass, which reflects and glares badly enough to ruin phone photos. Rooftop and front decks are open to the sky with nothing in the way. With small children, older guests or a very large group, however, the air-conditioned deck is the more comfortable choice.

What is “open-air under the roof”, and how is it different from an outdoor seat?

The difference is the roof. An open-air deck under the roof is still open to the river breeze, but it is covered above, so you cannot look straight up at fireworks bursting overhead. We do not count it as an outdoor seat, and it does not appear under the rooftop or front-deck filters. The boats with this zone are Meridian Cruise 2 (2nd floor, ฿2,500) and Sawasdee Chaophraya Cruise (2nd floor, ฿6,500). It is a good middle ground between the indoor deck and the rooftop if the rooftop has sold out.

Can I book indoors and go outside for the fireworks?

On most boats, yes — you can move to the open-air areas for the countdown. But standing space is limited and full by about 23:30, because everybody has the same idea, and you will be behind the guests who paid for that spot. Treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to skip an outdoor ticket.

What is a flat all-seats ticket?

Chaophraya Cruise sells one price covering every ticket on board instead of separate rooftop and indoor rates. That is simple for large groups, but it also means you are not buying a guaranteed outdoor seat: the operator allocates seating on the night. If an open-air seat is important, choose a boat that sells its rooftop or front deck separately, or message us first.

What time should I arrive at the pier on 31 December?

Arrive at the start of the registration window, not the end. The windows vary enormously, from 18:00–21:45 on Noah Cruise to just 30 minutes on Chaophraya Cruise (20:00–20:30). Riverside roads are heavily congested from about 19:00, so allow at least double your usual travel time. Late arrivals cannot be refunded.

Which pier is easiest to reach on New Year's Eve?

The Riverside Bangkok Hotel pier. It sits away from the worst central gridlock, so surrounding roads move noticeably better on 31 December, and it is a hotel in its own right. The easiest plan of all is to book a room, walk downstairs to board Faraya Cruise, Riverside Kinlen or Riverside Carnival, and go straight back up when the boat docks at 01:00.

What is included in the price?

Every countdown round includes an international buffet and your seat for the whole sailing. Most also include free-flow drinks — VIVA Alangka Cruise, Noah Cruise, Unicorn Cruise, Royal Princess Cruise, The Planet Cruise, Super Galaxy Cruise, Riverside Carnival, Riverside Kinlen, The Opulence, Smile Riverside, Meridian Cruise 1, Meridian Cruise 2 and Sawasdee Chaophraya Cruise all include spirits, wine and beer, while Chaophraya Cruise pours free-flow Chang draft beer. Several add a New Year gift set, champagne or a lucky draw (VIVA Alangka, Unicorn and Sawasdee Chaophraya all pour champagne for the countdown, and VIVA Alangka and Unicorn add a BBQ station, grilled river prawns and a mini birthday cake). The exception is Faraya Cruise, which is halal-certified and therefore 100% alcohol-free, serving free-flow Thai pulled tea and mocktails instead — and nothing alcoholic may be sold on board or brought aboard. Can I bring my own alcohol on board?

Almost every countdown cruise already includes a free-flow bar in the price, and outside drinks are generally not permitted. Faraya Cruise is the clearest case — it is halal-certified and 100% alcohol-free, so alcohol may not be brought aboard under any circumstances. Which boat is best for Thai food and a Thai show?

Riverside Kinlen. It is the only countdown cruise built around a Thai street-food buffet and a Thai musical show, with a mainly Thai crowd, while the others serve international buffets with Western-style entertainment. Rooftop seats at ฿4,800 are still open. Meridian Cruise 2, Unicorn Cruise and VIVA Alangka Cruise all run a Thai classical dance show alongside their live music, and Sawasdee Chaophraya Cruise serves Thai buffets alongside international ones.

Which boat has the most adult party atmosphere?

Riverside Carnival. Instead of a live band or cabaret, its entertainment is a sexy show performed by male and female models, giving it a more grown-up feel. It sails 21:00–01:00 from the Riverside Bangkok Hotel Pier with free-flow beer, whisky and wine. The rooftop is sold out; air-conditioned seats are ฿4,000. For a more nightclub-style party, The Opulence has a live band, DJ booth and special performances (rooftop also sold out), or Sawasdee Chaophraya Cruise runs a live band and DJ until 01:45 — joint-latest return of the night with VIVA Alangka Cruise — with its sky deck still open.

Which cruise suits families with children?

Smile Riverside Cruise (฿4,200 adult / ฿3,300 child), Meridian Cruise 2 (฿2,500 / ฿2,000) and Meridian Cruise 1 (฿2,900 / ฿2,200) are the most budget-friendly and the earliest to finish, at 00:30 and 00:15. Unicorn Cruise is the best family pick if you still want an open-air seat, at ฿4,800 adult / ฿4,200 child outdoors or ฿3,900 / ฿2,900 inside, with infants aged 0–3 travelling free. VIVA Alangka Cruise also lets infants aged 0–3 travel free, with a child rate for ages 4–10 up to 120 cm (฿3,500 inside / ฿5,000 outdoors), though it returns later, at 01:45. Faraya Cruise is worth considering for families who would rather avoid a drinking crowd, as it is 100% alcohol-free. For small children the air-conditioned deck is more comfortable — the rooftop is windy and crowded near midnight.

What happens if it rains on New Year's Eve?

Rain is unlikely: late December is Bangkok's dry season and New Year's Eve is usually clear. In light rain the boats sail as normal and the fireworks still go ahead; every boat has covered and air-conditioned areas. Cancellation only happens in genuinely severe weather, in which case the operator's refund or rescheduling policy applies — tell us and we will handle it.
