Koh Samui — the largest island in the Gulf of Thailand and a gateway to the Samui Archipelago.

Quick answer: the best things to do in Koh Samui

The essential Koh Samui experiences are a day trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park, snorkelling at Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, meeting rescued elephants at an ethical sanctuary, a 4WD jungle safari to Na Muang Waterfall, the Tree Bridge Zipline, a half-day to Pig Island (Koh Mudsum), ATV riding, a Samui city tour taking in the Big Buddha, a ferry hop to Koh Phangan, and time on Chaweng, Lamai, Mae Nam and Choeng Mon beaches. Most are day or half-day tours with hotel pick-up, so four to five days is enough to cover the highlights.

Short on time? If you only have one day, do Ang Thong. With two, add Koh Tao or the elephant sanctuary. See the 2, 3 and 5-day plans below.

Koh Samui, a district of Surat Thani Province, is the largest island in the Gulf of Thailand and the second largest in Thailand after Phuket. It pairs a proper resort-island infrastructure with an interior that is still mostly jungle, waterfalls and coconut plantation.

Whether you want to relax on soft-sand beaches, explore lush natural landscapes, snorkel or dive, get closer to local culture, or play golf on dramatic mountain courses, Samui covers it. This guide walks through the ten experiences that consistently deliver — and how to book each one.

1. Day Trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park

Thale Nai, the emerald saltwater lagoon on Koh Mae.

A tropical archipelago of 42 islands

Often called a wonder of nature, Ang Thong National Marine Park is an archipelago of 42 islands spread across roughly 100 square kilometres. Expect clear water full of marine life, powder-white beaches fringed with coconut palms, and dense jungle hiding waterfalls, caves and wildlife. If you only do one thing on Samui, make it this.

Koh Wua Ta Lap is the largest island and the park's focal point. The headline activity is the climb to the six viewpoints on Wua Ta Lap Mountain, which opens onto a panorama of the whole archipelago. The final stretch is steep and demands decent fitness — but the view is unmatched.

Beyond hiking you can kayak along the coastline, swim off the beaches, or snorkel in the shallows. Park headquarters has a restaurant and bungalows, and camping is available for anyone who wants to stay overnight under the stars.

Koh Mae is the other must-see. Its beach is beautiful, but the real draw is Thale Nai — an inland saltwater lagoon ringed by limestone cliffs, fed by an underwater cave connected to the sea. A 400-metre wooden walkway climbs to a viewpoint over the park before dropping down to the lagoon's edge.

Best time to visit and how to get there

Season: March to October is ideal. The park may close during rough weather between November and January.

Ang Thong sits about 30 kilometres from Koh Samui. Speedboats get you there fast and leave more time on the islands; larger boats are slower and steadier, with more deck space for taking in the scenery on the way.

2. Day Trip to Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan

Koh Nang Yuan's three islands, joined by pale sandbars.

Thailand's diving capital

Koh Tao — Turtle Island — is a diver's dream. Its clear water holds vibrant coral reefs and plenty of marine life, including the sea turtles it's named after. That underwater world turned Koh Tao into one of the world's busiest scuba-certification hubs and still drives the island's economy.

Above water, Koh Tao has excellent beaches. Haad Sairee is the longest and liveliest, lined with hotels, restaurants, dive schools and bars — a convenient base if you decide to extend. Plenty of visitors arrive for a day and stay for weeks.

A short boat ride away sits Koh Nang Yuan, famous for three islands linked by pristine sandbars. The hike to the viewpoint delivers the postcard shot, and the surrounding water is superb for snorkelling.

Please note: plastic bottles are banned on Koh Nang Yuan. Bring a reusable bottle.

3. Meet Rescued Elephants at an Ethical Sanctuary

Feeding and bathing elephants at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Samui.

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Samui

Thailand's national animal was once revered for its strength and put to work in logging and transport. Today those elephants deserve care and respect instead — and this is one of the better places on the island to give it.

At Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Samui, a 5-star rated camp, the priority is the herd's well-being: expert care, a low-stress environment, and no riding, no painting, no tricks. Just feeding, bathing and learning about the animals up close.

It's one of the most family-friendly half-days on Samui. Round-trip hotel transfers are included, and you can choose a morning or an afternoon programme.

4. Explore the Jungle on a 4WD Safari

Mr. Ung's Magical Safari climbs into Samui's mountainous interior.

Unleash the adventurer in you on Mr. Ung's Magical Safari Tour. A rugged 4WD jeep carries you through thick jungle to hidden waterfalls and mountaintop viewpoints that ordinary rental cars simply can't reach.

You'll see the island's heart and soul along the way — Na Muang Waterfall, the mysterious Mummified Monk, and sweeping panoramas from the ridge, followed by a Thai lunch at a scenic restaurant.

Hotel pick-up and drop-off make this full-day adventure effortless.

5. Fly Over the Canopy on the Tree Bridge Zipline

Eight platforms strung high above Samui's rainforest.

For the biggest adrenaline hit on the island, zipline straight through Koh Samui's rainforest canopy. The Tree Bridge Zipline links 8 platforms high above the jungle floor, with ocean and mountain views between runs.

Afterwards, unwind at the tree-house restaurant tucked into the branches — drinks, snacks and a genuinely lovely outlook. A short hike from there leads to a waterfall if you want to cool off.

Guides run safety checks at every platform, so it's a thrill without the worry. Whether you're a committed thrill-seeker or just after something different, this one earns its place on the list.

6. Visit Pig Island (Koh Mudsum) and Koh Tan

Koh Mudsum's famously friendly residents.

Escape the crowds on Koh Tan and Koh Mudsum, two quiet islands just a short boat ride off Samui's south coast.

Koh Tan, also known as Coral Island, has clear water and healthy reef life that make it a fine snorkelling spot. Between swims you can stretch out on the white sand or wander through the small fishing village.

Koh Mudsum — Pig Island — is the relaxed one: palm-fringed sand and a resident troop of very friendly pigs. Swim, sunbathe, or walk up to the island viewpoint.

A half-day speedboat tour covers both islands with lunch included. It's the ideal choice when you want island life without a long crossing — and it works well with young children.

Book the Pig Island half-day trip →

7. Go ATV Riding Through the Hills

Off-road trails through Samui's jungle interior.

See Koh Samui's raw side on an ATV adventure — remote mountain tracks, river crossings and climbs to viewpoints you'd never find on the ring road.

No previous experience is required. You'll cross a real mix of terrain, from dense jungle to open hillside, and the two-hour route finishes at a secluded waterfall that makes a perfect cool-down stop. Groups stay small and are led by experienced guides.

Pick the one-hour or two-hour option depending on your schedule and appetite for dust.

8. Samui City Tour by Private Charter Van (5 Hours)

The Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai, Samui's most recognisable landmark.

Samui's highlights in a single day

Circle the island in a private charter van and tick off the landmarks at your own pace. Start at the Big Buddha Temple, the 12-metre golden statue that greets every arriving flight, then slow down on Chaweng Beach for a swim and a coffee.

Carry on to Na Muang Waterfall for a dip in the pool below the falls, stop at the famously cheeky Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks at Lamai, and finish at Wat Khunaram, home of the mummified monk, with time for souvenir shopping on the way back.

It's the best first-day itinerary on Samui — a mix of culture, nature and easy sightseeing with a driver handling the logistics.

9. Take a Day Trip to Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan, 12 km north of Samui and far more than its party reputation.

Best known for the legendary Full Moon Party, Koh Phangan offers far more than nightlife. Only 12 kilometres from Koh Samui and reachable by ferry from Samui or the mainland, it has quiet beaches, thick jungle and hidden waterfalls across its northern and eastern coasts.

Snorkellers and divers will find plenty of reef a short boat ride from Thongsala and Haad Rin piers. Accommodation runs the full range, from simple guesthouses to private pool villas, so it works equally well as a day trip or a two-night extension.

10. Explore Koh Samui's Famous Beaches

Soft sand and calm Gulf water along Samui's east coast.

Koh Samui has a beach for every kind of traveller — the trick is picking the right one for your trip.

BeachAtmosphereBest for
ChawengLively, 6 km of powder sandNightlife, water sports, dining
LamaiRelaxed, more localGrandmother & Grandfather Rocks, quieter swims
Mae NamLow-key, north coastBudget stays, ferries to Koh Phangan
Choeng MonSheltered and upscaleLuxury resorts, privacy, families

Chaweng Beach is the undisputed queen — six kilometres of soft sand with the island's best nightlife and every water sport on offer. For something calmer, Lamai Beach has a more easy-going feel and the island's most photographed rock formations.

If affordable rooms and quick access to Koh Phangan matter most, Mae Nam Beach is your base. And for outright luxury and privacy, Choeng Mon Beach delivers wide, clean sand and a run of exclusive resorts.

What to do in Koh Samui if you only have one day

Take the Ang Thong day trip. It leaves early, returns late afternoon, and packs viewpoints, kayaking, snorkelling and the Thale Nai lagoon into a single boat. If the sea is rough and the park is closed, swap in the five-hour city tour and spend the afternoon on Chaweng.

What to do in Samui when it rains

Boat trips are the first thing weather cancels, so keep a wet-weather plan: the Big Buddha and Wat Khunaram stay open, Samui's spa and Thai-massage scene is excellent value, and Fisherman's Village in Bophut is easy to wander under cover. The 4WD safari usually still runs — the jungle looks better in the rain.

What to do in Koh Samui at night

Chaweng has the island's main nightlife strip, Lamai is a quieter alternative, and the Fisherman's Village Walking Street in Bophut runs on Friday evenings with food stalls and live music. Koh Phangan's Full Moon Party is a boat ride away if the dates line up.

Planning Your Koh Samui Trip

When to visit

Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand, so its seasons run differently from Phuket. February to August is the sweet spot — calm seas, reliable boat departures and the best snorkelling visibility. October to December is the wettest stretch, when Ang Thong and longer crossings are most likely to be cancelled.

How to get there

Fly directly into Samui International Airport (USM) from Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. The cheaper route is a flight or train to Surat Thani, then a ferry from Donsak pier — slower, but a fraction of the airfare.

How many days do you need?

Four to five nights comfortably covers this list: one full day for Ang Thong, one for Koh Tao, one split between the elephant sanctuary and a zipline or ATV session, one for the city tour, and one left open for the beach.

Getting around the island

Samui's ring road loops the whole island in about 90 minutes without stops. Songthaews (red pick-up trucks) run fixed routes along the coast, Grab works in the main beach areas, and scooters are cheap but genuinely risky on the steep sections. Most tours in this guide include hotel transfers, which is the simplest option.

Booking tips

Book boat trips early in your stay. If weather cancels a departure, you still have days left to rebook — leaving Ang Thong for your final morning is how people miss it entirely.

Most tours here include hotel pick-up across Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Mae Nam and Choeng Mon. Confirm your pick-up window the evening before, and bring reef-safe sunscreen, a reusable water bottle and a dry bag for boat days.

Koh Samui FAQ

What is the number one thing to do in Koh Samui?

A full-day boat trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park is the standout. The 42-island archipelago combines the Wua Ta Lap viewpoint hike, kayaking and the Thale Nai lagoon on Koh Mae in a single day, roughly 30 km from Samui.

What are the top 10 things to do in Koh Samui?

Ang Thong National Marine Park, Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, an ethical elephant sanctuary, a 4WD jungle safari to Na Muang Waterfall, the Tree Bridge Zipline, Pig Island and Koh Tan, ATV riding, a Samui city tour taking in the Big Buddha, a Koh Phangan day trip, and the beaches at Chaweng, Lamai, Mae Nam and Choeng Mon.

What is there to do in Koh Samui for 3 days?

Spend day one at Ang Thong National Marine Park, day two on a half-day at the elephant sanctuary plus a zipline or ATV session, and day three on the five-hour city tour followed by an afternoon at Lamai or Chaweng. Three days covers everything except Koh Tao.

What is the best time of year to visit Koh Samui?

February to August brings the calmest seas and most reliable tour departures. October to December is the rainiest period, and Ang Thong National Marine Park may close in rough weather between November and January.

How many days should I spend in Koh Samui?

Four to five nights is ideal — enough for two full-day island trips, a half-day activity, a city tour and at least one full beach day without rushing.

Is Koh Tao or Ang Thong the better day trip?

Choose Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan if snorkelling and diving are your priority — the reefs and visibility are better. Choose Ang Thong for dramatic scenery, kayaking and viewpoint hiking. Koh Tao involves a noticeably longer boat ride, so nervous sailors should take Ang Thong.

Is Koh Samui good for families with children?

Yes. The elephant sanctuary, the Pig Island half-day trip and the calm, shallow water at Choeng Mon Beach all suit young children. Ang Thong and Koh Tao involve long boat journeys that are better for older kids.

Do I need to book Koh Samui tours in advance?

Booking ahead is strongly recommended during high season (December to March) and for limited-capacity experiences such as the elephant sanctuary and private charter tours. Reserving online also locks in hotel pick-up.

How do I get to Koh Samui?

Fly direct to Samui International Airport (USM), or fly/take the train to Surat Thani and cross by ferry from Donsak pier. The ferry route costs considerably less but takes most of a day.

Are elephant experiences on Koh Samui ethical?

Choose sanctuaries with a no-riding policy. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Samui is a 5-star rated camp where visitors only feed, bathe and observe the elephants — no riding, painting or performance.
