Are the White, Blue and Red Temples in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai?

They are all in Chiang Rai province – and this is the single most common mix-up among visitors. There is no White Temple, Blue Temple or Red Temple in Chiang Mai itself; the three are clustered around Chiang Rai city, roughly 180 km north of Chiang Mai on Route 118, about a 3-hour drive each way. That is exactly why a guided day trip works so well: you leave Chiang Mai early, cover all three temples plus the café and the hot spring in one loop, and sleep in Chiang Mai the same night.

The three temples at a glance

Temple Thai name Known for Time on tour
White Temple Wat Rong Khun All-white mirror-mosaic art temple by Chalermchai Kositpipat 50 minutes
Blue Temple Wat Rong Suea Ten Sapphire-blue hall, gold detail and a white seated Buddha 30 minutes
Red Temple Wat Huay Pla Kang Nine-tier pagoda, giant Guan Yin statue, hilltop panorama 30 minutes

A Closer Look at Each Stop

White Temple – Wat Rong Khun (วัดร่องขุ่น)

Thailand’s most photographed contemporary temple, designed and funded by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Brilliant white plaster is inlaid with thousands of mirror fragments so the whole structure glitters in the sun, while the bridge to the main hall crosses a sea of reaching hands representing worldly desire. Foreign visitors pay a 200 THB entrance fee; Thai nationals enter free. You have around 50 minutes here – the longest stop of the day.

Blue Temple – Wat Rong Suea Ten (วัดร่องเสือเต้น)

Only a few kilometres from Chiang Rai city centre, the Blue Temple takes its name from the deep sapphire that covers every wall, ceiling and naga guardian, offset with gold leaf and a luminous white seated Buddha inside. It was completed far more recently than the White Temple and is often the surprise favourite of the day. Entry is free, and the tour allows about 30 minutes.

Red Temple – Wat Huay Pla Kang (วัดห้วยปลากั้ง)

Perched on a hill just outside Chiang Rai city, the Red Temple is best known for its nine-tier pagoda in Chinese-Lanna style and the giant white Guan Yin statue that towers over the surrounding valley. Climb or ride up inside the pagoda for panoramic views over Chiang Rai – one of the best viewpoints on the whole tour. The temple grounds are free to enter; the lift inside the pagoda costs 40 THB per person, paid on site, and the stairs are always free.

Lalitta Café, Chiang Rai (ลลิตา คาเฟ่)

A fairytale garden café in Rimkok, Mueang Chiang Rai – just minutes from the Red Temple, which is why the two sit back-to-back on this itinerary. Inspired by the mythical Himmapan forest, it wraps misty walkways, koi ponds and sculpted creatures around a dramatic multi-tier waterfall, and it is comfortably the most photographed café in Chiang Rai. Entry is 60 THB per person and the menu of coffee, cakes and Thai and Western dishes is paid separately at the counter. You have around 40 minutes here.

The name is also written Lalita, Lalitha or Lalitta Cafe, and appears as Лалитта in Russian. There is only one Lalitta Café and it is in Chiang Rai – not in Chiang Mai, Krabi or Phuket.

Mae Kachan Hot Spring (น้ำพุร้อนแม่ขะจาน)

The traditional halfway rest stop between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, where geothermal water bubbles up beside the highway. Soak your feet in the warm channels for about 20 minutes, browse the snack stalls, and get back on the road refreshed. No charge for the foot-soak area.

Long Neck Karen village – optional

A visit to a Kayan (Long Neck Karen) hilltribe village in Chiang Rai province, where women of the community are known for the brass coils worn around the neck, and handwoven scarves and crafts are sold directly by residents. The stop lasts about 30 minutes and the 300 THB per person village entrance fee is paid on the spot. Joining is completely optional – guests who prefer to skip it can explore the surrounding area while the group is inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the White Temple in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai?
The White Temple, Wat Rong Khun, is in Chiang Rai, about 180 km north of Chiang Mai. There is no White Temple in Chiang Mai itself. This tour makes the round trip in a single day, so you can stay in Chiang Mai and still see it.
How do I get to Wat Rong Khun from Chiang Mai?
By road it is roughly 180 km on Route 118, about a 3-hour drive each way. Doing it independently means a bus to Chiang Rai plus local transport to each temple. On this tour you are collected from your hotel in Chiang Mai between 07:00 and 07:30 in an air-conditioned vehicle and driven directly between all the stops.
Can I really see the White, Blue and Red Temples in one day?
Yes. All three are close together in Chiang Rai province, so the tour allows about 50 minutes at the White Temple and 30 minutes each at the Blue Temple and the Red Temple, plus Lalitta Café, lunch and Mae Kachan Hot Spring. An early 07:00 start is what makes it fit comfortably into one day.
How much is the entrance fee for this tour?
Admission totals 260 THB per foreign visitor or 60 THB per Thai national, and it is added to your booking during payment rather than collected on the day. That covers the White Temple (200 THB for foreigners, free for Thai nationals) and Lalitta Café (60 THB for everyone). The Blue Temple and the Red Temple grounds are free to enter.
What is the entrance fee for the Red Temple in Chiang Rai?
Wat Huay Pla Kang, the Red Temple, is free to enter – including the grounds and the giant Guan Yin statue. The only charge is the 40 THB lift inside the nine-tier pagoda, paid on site, and the stairs are free if you would rather walk up.
Is the Blue Temple free to visit?
Yes. Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple, has no entrance fee for Thai or foreign visitors, though donation boxes are available inside if you wish to contribute.
How much does Lalitta Café cost to enter?
Lalitta Café charges 60 THB per person to enter the grounds, and that amount is already part of the admission added to your booking. Anything you order from the food and drinks menu is paid separately at the café.
What is on the Lalitta Café menu?
The café serves hot and iced coffee, tea, smoothies, cakes and a mix of Thai and Western dishes. Orders are paid directly at the café and are not included in the tour price. Prices and the exact menu are set by the café and may change.
Where is Lalitta Café and how far is it from Bangkok?
Lalitta Café is in Rimkok, Mueang Chiang Rai district, Chiang Rai province, a few minutes from the Red Temple. From Bangkok it is roughly 790 km by road – about 10 to 12 hours of driving, or a flight of around 1 hour 20 minutes to Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai. Most visitors reach it on a day trip from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, as on this tour.
Is there a Lalitta Café in Chiang Mai, Krabi or Phuket?
No. Lalitta Café is in Chiang Rai only. It is often searched as “Lalitta Café Chiang Mai” because most visitors travel there from Chiang Mai, and the name is sometimes spelled Lalita or Lalitha.
Is there a dress code at the temples?
Yes. Shoulders and knees must be covered at all three temples, and the rule is enforced strictly at the White Temple. Long trousers or a long skirt with a sleeved top works best, and a light scarf in your bag is a simple backup.
Is the Long Neck Karen village included?
The stop is included in the route but the entrance fee is not. It costs 300 THB per person, paid on the spot, and joining is entirely optional – if you would rather skip it you can explore the surrounding area while the group visits.
Is lunch vegetarian-friendly?
Yes. The Thai set lunch comes with a choice of chicken or vegetarian – simply tell us your preference when you book. Please note the restaurant is not halal certified.
Is a Chinese-speaking guide available?
Yes. We run this tour with both English-speaking and Chinese-speaking guides, on separate departures. Please specify the language you need in your booking request and we will place you in the matching group.
Is this a private tour or a shared group tour?
It is a join-in group tour, shared with other travellers, which is what keeps the price low. A private departure with your own vehicle and guide can be arranged on request – contact us for a quote.
What time does the tour start and finish?
Hotel pick-up in Chiang Mai city is between 07:00 and 07:30, and you are normally back at your hotel between 18:30 and 19:00 – roughly 11 to 12 hours in total, depending on traffic and where you are staying.
