What Is a Speed Catamaran?

A speed catamaran is a powered boat built on two parallel hulls instead of the single V-shaped hull of a conventional speedboat. The extra beam spreads the boat’s weight across a much wider footprint, so it sits flatter in the water and slams far less when it meets a swell – while still travelling at speedboat pace. On a long open-water day like the Phuket to Phi Phi crossing, that combination is the whole point: you cover the same distance just as quickly, but arrive feeling considerably fresher.

Phi Phi national park fee and Maya Bay rules

Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave all sit inside Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, so foreign visitors pay a national park entrance fee of 400 THB per person. It is not part of the tour rate itself – it is added to your booking total when you book, so there is nothing to pay at the park on the day.

Maya Bay rules: swimming inside the bay is not permitted, as the shallows are a protected nursery for blacktip reef sharks and replanted coral. The bay also closes to visitors every year from 1 August to 30 September for ecological recovery; during that period the operator substitutes another stop, which can vary from departure to departure.

  • Everything is settled when you book. The national park fee and any transfer surcharge are added to your booking total, so apart from anything you buy for yourself there is no extra charge on the travel date.

  • Vegetarian meals need no advance notice. A vegetarian option is available at the buffet lunch, so there is nothing to pre-order.

Good to Know Before You Book

  • Water activities are free, but shared. The clear kayaks, paddleboards and inflatable slide at Maiton Island are included at no extra cost, but there is a limited number of each. At busy times you may need to queue and take your turn, so the crew can share them fairly among everyone on board.
  • Which catamaran will I be on? The operator runs three catamarans, so the boat you sail on may not be the exact one pictured in the photos on this page. All three are licensed and operated to the same standard.
  • Dolphins are wild animals. The waters around Maiton Island are one of the better places near Phuket to see them, and sightings are common – but they are never guaranteed, and no stop is made specifically to find them.
  • Maya Bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September so the reef and beach can recover. During the closure the operator substitutes another stop in its place; the alternative is decided by the boat and can vary from departure to departure.
  • You cannot swim inside Maya Bay. The bay is a protected nursery area, so the visit is a beach and scenery stop – the swimming and snorkelling on this tour happen at Khai Nok, Phi Phi Leh, Pileh Lagoon and Maiton.
  • The route may be reordered. Weather, tide and national park traffic management can change the sequence or the timing of any stop without prior notice – including moving Maya Bay to earlier in the day.

Why do Rawai and Nai Harn need a private vehicle?
The boat leaves from Jian Wanich Pier on the east side of Phuket, not from Chalong, so Rawai and Nai Harn fall outside the shared shuttle route. A private vehicle is used instead, at 1,800 THB round-trip per vehicle for up to 12 passengers.
