A full-day Similan Islands tour from Khao Lak aboard a premium speed catamaran — with forward-facing seats, wide open decks and a sun deck, it is the most comfortable way to reach the finest white-sand beaches in the Andaman Sea. Khao Lak is the closest mainland base to the Similan Islands, so you are collected from your hotel and taken on a short transfer to the private pier at Thap Lamu, then cross straight into Mu Ko Similan National Park.
Snorkel the clear shallow reefs of Payu and Ba Ngu, walk the powdery sand of Koh Miang, and climb the granite boulders to Sail Rock viewpoint above Donald Duck Bay — the most photographed panorama in the Similans. Three meals, snorkelling gear and round-trip hotel transfer are all included.

Why book this Similan Islands day trip from Khao Lak
- The shortest journey to the Similans. Thap Lamu is the mainland pier for the Similan Islands and it sits right on Khao Lak's doorstep, so your transfer is short and you spend the day on the islands rather than on the road.
- Premium speed catamaran, not a crowded big boat. A twin-hull catamaran sits flatter in the water than a single-hull speedboat, so the crossing is noticeably steadier and drier. Seats face forward in the direction of travel, the decks are wide enough to walk around, and an open sun deck gives you panoramic views across the Andaman Sea.
- Four islands in one day. Koh Miang (No. 4), Payu (No. 7), Similan (No. 8) and Ba Ngu (No. 9) — the highlights of the national park in a single trip.
- Sail Rock and Donald Duck Bay. Free time after lunch to hike the short granite trail to the Similan Islands' most famous viewpoint.
- Three meals included. Thai breakfast at the pier, a lunch set served on the islands, and a Southern Thai dinner when you get back — not a lunchbox-only day trip.
- Door-to-door transfer. Round-trip hotel pick-up and drop-off within the Khao Lak service area, plus snorkelling gear, beach towel and insurance.
Your departure pier at Thap Lamu
Your tour departs from the private Wow Andaman pier in the Thap Lamu pier area — the mainland gateway to the Similan Islands and the shortest crossing into the national park. Unlike a shared public jetty, this terminal was built specifically for Similan and Surin Islands day trips, so the day starts calmly: you check in, collect your snorkelling gear and sit down to a Thai-style breakfast with coffee and tea before boarding.
Pier address: 60/6 Moo 5, Lam Kaen, Thai Mueang, Phang Nga — in the Thap Lamu pier area, a short drive from Khao Lak.
View on Google Maps. Your transfer takes you there directly from your hotel, so there is no need to find your own way; free private parking is available at the terminal if you prefer to drive.
Facilities at the pier are free for all guests:
- Plenty of bathrooms for after the trip
- Free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal
- Secure luggage storage rooms
- Private car parking
- Souvenir shops and a seating area
Moving on the same evening? The luggage storage at the pier means you can check out of your Khao Lak hotel in the morning, join the tour, shower before you leave and travel straight on. One piece of luggage per person is included; additional bags are charged at 300 THB per bag.

Speed catamaran or speedboat?
You choose your boat when you book. Both run the same route, visit the same islands on the same timings, and both are priced identically — the only difference is the ride. On Sundays the speedboat is the only option available.
On board the premium speed catamaran
- Forward-facing seats. Every seat faces the direction of travel rather than sideways, which makes the crossing far more comfortable — and makes a genuine difference if you are prone to motion sickness.
- Room to move. The twin-hull design gives a much wider deck, so you are not confined to your seat for the whole journey.
- Open-air sun deck. Sunbathe, catch the breeze or take photos from the top deck while you cruise.
- Better views. Seated higher and facing forward, you get an open panorama of the Andaman Sea rather than the back of the seat in front of you.
On board the speedboat
The speedboat is the classic Similan Islands day-trip boat from Khao Lak: a single hull that gets up to speed quickly and sits closer to the water, with bench seating and a more open, exhilarating feel on the crossing. It visits exactly the same islands, follows the same timings and costs the same as the catamaran.

How to get to the Similan Islands from Khao Lak
There is no ferry or public boat from Khao Lak to the Similan Islands, and no accommodation on the islands for day visitors — the only way to visit is on an organised day trip departing from the mainland pier at Thap Lamu.
The good news is that Khao Lak is the nearest base to the national park, so that pier is just a short road transfer away. This tour handles the whole journey for you: hotel pick-up, the transfer to Thap Lamu, the sea crossing, your guide, snorkelling gear and all three meals are arranged as one booking, so there is nothing to organise on the day.
Staying in Phuket instead? Phuket is further from the pier, so we run a separate departure with its own transfer times for Phuket hotels. Please book the
Similan Islands tour from Phuket instead of this page.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Khao Lak to the Similan Islands?
There is no public ferry from Khao Lak to the Similan Islands. Every visit is made as an organised day trip from the mainland pier at Thap Lamu, which is the closest departure point to the national park and only a short drive from Khao Lak. On this tour you are collected from your Khao Lak hotel in the morning, driven to the private pier and taken across by premium speed catamaran, returning the same evening.
Where exactly is the departure pier?
The tour departs from the private Wow Andaman pier at 60/6 Moo 5, Lam Kaen, Thai Mueang, Phang Nga — in the Thap Lamu pier area just outside Khao Lak, the mainland departure point for the Similan Islands. You do not need to make your own way there: your round-trip transfer collects you from your Khao Lak hotel and brings you back afterwards. If you prefer to drive yourself, free private parking is available at the terminal.
View the pier on Google Maps.
How long is the Similan Islands day trip from Khao Lak?
It is a full day. Your hotel transfer collects you in time for check-in at the pier at 07:30, and the boat departs at 08:30. You leave the islands at around 15:30 and arrive back at the pier at about 17:00 for dinner, then transfer to your hotel. The exact pick-up time depends on where your hotel is in Khao Lak and is confirmed in your booking email.
Is the national park entrance fee included in the price?
No. The Mu Ko Similan National Park entrance fee is not included in the price shown on this page. It is set by the Department of National Parks and applies to every visitor. For non-Thai nationals the foreign-visitor rate is added to your booking total at the time of booking, so it is paid in advance and you do not need to carry cash for it on the day.
When are the Similan Islands open and closed?
Mu Ko Similan National Park is open for roughly half the year, normally from mid-October until mid-May, and closes during the southwest monsoon from around 16 May to 14 October. The exact opening and closing dates are announced each year by the national park authority. Seas are generally calmest and visibility best from December to April.
Catamaran or speedboat — which should I choose?
Both run the same route, visit the same islands and cost the same. The premium speed catamaran is the more comfortable ride: two hulls keep it flatter across the swell, every seat faces forward in the direction of travel, the decks are wide enough to move around, and there is an open sun deck with panoramic views of the Andaman Sea. That makes it the better choice for families and anyone prone to seasickness. The speedboat is a single hull with bench seating — quicker off the mark and closer to the water, which many guests enjoy. You choose when you book: both boats are available Monday to Saturday, and on Sundays the speedboat is the only option.
Does the catamaran have a sun deck?
Yes. The premium speed catamaran has an open-air sun deck where you can sunbathe, feel the breeze and take photos while you cruise, with panoramic views across the Andaman Sea. Below, the seats face forward in the direction of travel and the decks are wide enough to walk around during the crossing. Please note that the sun deck is a feature of the catamaran only — it is not available on the speedboat used for Sunday departures.
Which Similan Islands does this tour visit?
Four: Koh Miang (Island No. 4) for the beach and wildlife, Payu Island (No. 7) or Similan Island (No. 8) for the first snorkelling stop, Similan Island No. 8 for lunch, beach time and the Sail Rock viewpoint, and Ba Ngu Island (No. 9) for the final snorkelling stop.
What is Sail Rock and can I climb it?
Sail Rock — sometimes written Sailing Rock — is the huge granite boulder balanced above Donald Duck Bay on Similan Island No. 8, and it is the most photographed spot in the archipelago. A short trail of granite steps and boulders leads to the viewpoint at the top; most guests manage it in 15 to 20 minutes. It is optional, so if you would rather stay on the beach or snorkel during that time, you can.
Can I stay overnight on the Similan Islands?
Not on this tour. Mu Ko Similan National Park is visited as a day trip, and day visitors return to the mainland the same evening. Khao Lak is the usual base for anyone wanting to visit the Similans, which is why this departure has the shortest transfer of all our Similan tours.
Can I join this tour from Phuket?
Yes, but please book the Phuket departure rather than this page. Phuket is further from the pier, so that version has earlier pick-up times and its own pricing: see the
Similan Islands tour from Phuket.
Can children join the Similan Islands tour?
Children aged 19 months and over are welcome, and snorkelling gear including a life vest is provided for every guest. For safety reasons, children under 19 months, guests over 70 years of age and pregnant women cannot join, along with anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, recent surgery or other serious medical condition.
How much luggage can I bring?
One piece of luggage per person is included, and each additional bag is charged at 300 THB. Luggage storage at the pier is free, which makes this tour practical on a Khao Lak check-out day or before an onward journey.
What else is there to do near Khao Lak?
The Surin Islands are the other great snorkelling destination in this part of the Andaman Sea, with shallow reefs, a Moken sea gypsy village and generally fewer visitors than the Similans. See the
Surin Islands snorkelling day trip.
