Tips for Visiting an Elephant Sanctuary

Make the most of your visit with these practical tips:

Come Prepared
Many sanctuaries allow visitors to walk alongside elephants through light forest areas. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. If you have sensitive skin, long pants can help protect your legs from grass and small branches, although they may be less convenient if you enter a river or elephant pond during the visit.

Bring a Change of Clothes
Even if the sanctuary does not allow elephant bathing, you may still have the opportunity to observe elephants while they relax in a river or pond. In some cases, visitors can help cool the elephants by splashing water from the riverbank or poolside. Bringing a change of clothes is therefore recommended.

Allow Extra Time for Travel
Most elephant sanctuaries require significant travel time, and traffic conditions can be unpredictable. Delays are possible, so we recommend avoiding any important appointments immediately after your tour.

Approach Elephants Properly
Elephants have relatively poor eyesight, so you should never approach them silently. Always approach an elephant together with its caretaker, and make your presence known by speaking or calling the elephant's name as instructed by the caretaker.

Feed Only Approved Food
Please do not feed elephants any food that you bring yourself. Only offer food provided by the sanctuary or prepared as part of the scheduled activities. This helps ensure the elephants' health and safety.

Follow the Caretakers' Instructions
Always listen carefully to the caretakers' guidance. They have extensive experience working with elephants and understand each animal's personality and behavior. Although elephants are generally gentle and friendly, they are large animals with individual temperaments. The caretakers know the safest and most appropriate way to interact with each elephant.
